Kindergarten and First GradeOur Kindergarten and First graders worked with Rosy and non-tech programming and then they moved on to using Go, Path, Blockly and Wonder with their Dash and Dot robots. 2nd and 3rd GradeToday our 2nd and 3rd graders explored earthquake magnitude as they designed buildings to withstand a magnitude of 10. 4th and 5th GradeOur 4th and 5th graders begin building for their Challenge. Can you create a robot that will move two blocks from one area of the field to the other using a plow, a lift, or a friction grabber design?

Kindergarten and 1st grade - Dash and DotToday our first graders practiced teamwork by playing a game of Rosie the Dog. The children practiced working together as a team to give Rosie (our computer dog) directions to get from the fire hydrant to her dog house. We used directions like forward, backward, left and right to direct Rosie. Then we tried using those same directions as we worked with our teams to Drive Dash. We drove Dash around different geometric shapes. We drove dash to number cards. 2nd and 3rd graders - LEGO WeDo 2.0Today we worked on our sheet challenge. Then we finished building our pulling robot and moved on to creating and programming a racecar. 4th and 5th graders - VEX IQOur teambuilding activity was a review of what we did the last time with our drive bases. We shared what we learned about how to create a drive base that gives the best maneuverability. Then we looked at combining our gear simulator and our drive base and adding motors to create a chassis that would be the framework for our challenge robot. We used the animated instructions for building a standard drive base to create the beginning part of our robot. A couple groups finished the build and were able to test out controlling their robots with the controller.
Kindergarten and 1st graders - Dash and DotOur teambuilder today was a game of Telephone. After our game we broke into two groups. The Kindergartners worked with Dash and the Go app and the 1st graders worked with Dash and the Blockly app. The Kindergartners practiced driving Dash to colored circles, alphabet letters and word cards. Our first graders began writing programs in Blockly for their Dash robot to follow. 2nd and 3rd graders - LEGO WeDo 2.0Today the 2nd and 3rd graders continued working on their teambuilding activity (turning the sheet over) and almost figured out a solution. Then we looked at how to write a program in LEGO WeDo. We added programs to our first robots (Getting Started) and then began building a robot with a bumpy wheel structure that would pull something backwards. 4th and 5th graders - VEX IQOur 4th and 5th graders began the day with a review of the different VEX parts and then we completed challenge activities with gears. Our build for the day was two different drive bases. We explored a base that was wider than it was long and the wheels were close together. We also explored a base that was longer than it was wide and the wheels were further apart. Which one do you think is the easiest to maneuver? Why? Does the type of tire/wheel make a difference? We explored this. What do you think we discovered?
Kindergarten and first gradeFor our teambuilding today we got in a tight circle facing inward and then we rotated 90 degrees and sat down. It took a while, but we were finally able to sit on the lap of the person behind us without falling down. Great teamwork and synergizing. With our robots we broke up into a first grade group and a kindergarten group. The first graders worked on using Blockly to control their robots and the kindergartners used Go to move their robots through an obstacle course. 2nd and 3rd gradeOur teambuilding activity today was hard. We had to stand on the edge of a sheet and figure out how to flip it completely over without using our hands and without knocking anybody off the sheet. We need to keep working on this one. Then we opened up our LEGO WeDo kits and began building our first robots. 4th and 5th gradeOur teambuilding activity today was a scavenger hunt for VEX IQ parts. We're learning what to call all of the different pieces. Then we made a gear simulator and explored different ways to put different gears together.
We are so excited to get our after school program started. For our first meeting students worked on a teambuilding activity and then each group began working with their robot materials. We spent some time talking about how to respectfully take care of materials so that they would be available when we needed them. We ended by reflecting on our day. Here's some pictures from our first day. Kindergarten and 1st grade - Dash and Dot2nd and 3rd graders - LEGO WeDo 2.04th and 5th graders - VEX IQ |
