LEGO WeDo 2.0
Week 1 -
- Teambuilding activity - an important part of our after school program involves learning how to work together with one or two other students. Each week we will begin with a team building activity to promote working together, listening to another person's ideas and how to problem solve when something gets hard.
- Winnie the Pooh challenge (http://stemactivitiesforkids.com/2015/12/10/team-building-for-stem-challenges/#more-502)
- Materials (string, large book ring, tennis ball)
- Build - This week we'll be introducing the kits and talking about how to care for our WeDo Kits (and why we want to take care of them)
- Demonstrate where to put the lid and any paper materials that are inside of the kit
- Point out how the kits are organized (what goes in the trays and what goes in the bottom of the kit)
- Discuss what happens if pieces get lost (can't complete a build)
- Role model what to do when pieces are dropped (immediately get down on the floor and pick them up)
- Free build challenge: Build a structure that will move at least 6 inches when gently pushed.
- Reflect -
- Synergizing; On a scale of 1-3 how well did you and your partner work together as a team. (1 - not very well, 2- we did ok, we could do better 3 - We worked well together)
- Did our structure meet the criteria? Tie to Proactive and Begin with the End in Mind
- Yes-what worked?
- No-what would you modify (change) or do differently next time?
- Materials: On a scale of 1-3 how well did we manage our materials? (1 - not very well, 2- we did ok, we could do better 3 - We treated our materials with respect)
Week 2 -
- Teambuilding activity
- Everybody stand in a circle on the sheet
- Without using your hands flip the sheet over
- If anyone falls off the sheet you need to begin again
- Build - Introduce WeDo software and begin with the Getting Started builds. - See directions below.

Step 4: Notice the tabs at the top left of the page.
For week 2 we will be starting with the 4 builds in the Getting Started area:
|
Step 6: Each project build is set up with the following sections:
Explore-This is where you will be introduced to your project and there is usually a movie (not always with words) to show what you are going to do. Begin here Create - This is where you'll find the directions to build your project. Be sure to look for the navigation arrows at the bottom of the build page so that you can find your building directions. In the Create phase you'll be walked through how to identify your hub and connect to it and you'll see a sample for how to program your robot. Share - You can use the documentation tools to capture the work that you did. |
Week 3 -
- Teambuilding activity - try the sheet activity again
- Everybody stand in a circle on the sheet
- Without using your hands flip the sheet over
- If anyone falls off the sheet you need to begin again
- Build - Continue with WeDo software and finish the Getting Started builds. - See directions below.
- Introduce the programming blocks and how to pair the robot to the computer
- Finish the Getting Started builds (last build is collaborative- two robots connected together and one computer (we're not sure how this one is going to work so this will be a problem-solving opportunity.

- Build - Continue with WeDo software and finish the Getting Started builds. - See directions below.
- Continue working on the Pulling build - finish
- Move on to 2. Speed

Week 5 -
- Teambuilding activity
- Sheet activity applying what they learned from 1/2 group to the whole group
- Build
- Robust Structures
- How to change the magnitude of the earthquake - what does the program do? What type of a building would withstand a magnitude 10 earthquake?
- Frog's Metamorphosis
- taking photos before morphing
- introducing gears for walking legs for the frog
- morph from young frog to adult (own design) - change front and back legs, change appearance - mature tongue, eye position, patterns on the skin
- use sounds or motion sensor to change behavior (move when it senses motion)
